Further analysis on Mise en Scene in relation to rock (research)

 "placing on stage"
 "visual theme"

in visually artful ways through storyboarding, cinematography and stage design, and in poetically artful ways through direction. Mise-en-scène has been called film criticism's "grand undefined term".

Through research I have been able to identify the following about Mise en Scene rock:

  • Props: musical instruments (drum kit, guitar, bass), lights, bags, microphone, technology
  • Costumes: usually dark clothing, studs, baggy tops, shorts, leather, lots of jewellery, boots
  • Lighting: usually lots of darkness with bright lights in foreground or back ground, bright a pon the face
  • Setting: usually against a coloured back ground, or patterened, or at a concert, or in a public place
  • Make-up & hair: usually heavy, dark around the eyes, sometimes bright lipstick, not usually much colour in the face, hair is usually down and long, and messy, sometimes bright colours
  • Colours: usually very dark back ground, cover model is usually in contrast with the back ground to make them stand out, photographs are usually in black and white
