Coming together...

Completed magazine front cover?

After receiving even more feedback from my peers and teacher, I had realised that the front cover didn't have enough on it and I needed to make it look more professional, I therefore:

  • Changed the title of the magazine to make it more modern, and I changed the font and colour of the text. This makes the text stand out and it catches the eye of the audience.
  • I've made the text more appropriate to the 'Halloween Issue' by adding pictures and stating that it is actually a special issue
  • By making the surrounding subheadings more colourful and changing the fonts and underlining certain things, I believe that the stories are standing out more.
  • By putting the 'EXCLUSIVE' at the top of the magazine, gives a more professional feel.

Front Cover

After receiving feedback from my peers and teacher, I realised that my front page wasn't really good enough, and it wasn't the best I could possibly do. So I have finally produced the front cover that I am happy with:
My inspiration comes from womens magazines, and I went along with the ideas of:

  • Having the main focus as the background picture (mine is the Idsall School field and I have got the oak tree into the image, to brand this picture 'Idsall' and not any field with a tree in it) and I have also edited the photo, to make it more colourful
  • I have placed the magazine title at the very top of the page to inform the public what it will be that they are picking up, and it also engages the public a lot more than the old picture did.
  • The subject headings are a lot bolder and they are easily readable now.
  • I have placed the barcode and price at the bottom of the page, so the readers eyes don't focus on the price and the bar code

Edited but Finished Contents Page

After getting feedback on my contents page, I had realised that I had not filled the gap at the bottom of the page, so instead I filled it in with green stars that I had used for the margin. I think that this looks more appealing to children. It will catch their eye and make them want to read more into the magazine; the contents page intrigues the reader and gives them an idea of what will be inside of the magazine.

BARB

I am looking at the BARB website, which provides the general public with loads of various TV figures, the public can view it at any time, any where. It also provides us with:
  • News
  • TV facts
  • Viewing summary
  • Annual viewing percentages
  • Glossary
  • FAQ's
  • Top 10's & top 30's
  • Various maps
And so on, the website is very interesting, and provides you with lots of information that you would know right now. From looking at the BARB website, I have learnt:
  • Various TV figures for my favourite TV shows
  • What's in the Top Ten most weekly viewed programs
  • The structure of the Underwriting Organisations
  • The total viewing summary from 1992-2009

My School Magazine Contents Page

This is where I am at so far with my contents page; I have so far added some pictures although I still have a lot of work to do, such as:
  • Change the back ground colour
  • More pictures and animation
  • Subjet headings
  • More alternative text/font
  • Different sizes of text and picture
  • Shapes
  • Shading and reflection
  • Paragraph to introduce the magazine

This is my finished magazine contents page, which I believe is much better and more appealing to the minds of children, and which also will be eye catching for adults.
  • The introductory paragraph gives the parents and/or children an insight view on what we think about our school, and it also provides them with a few facts and information about our school. I think that this is key information for a parent/child to have if they have never been to the school before, because you never know who will pick your magazine up and take a look at it.
  • I think that the boarders and images are very important to have a successful magazine because it catches the eye and makes the reader look in that direction, the attention focuses on the particular part of the page that you want them to and then they will be more encouraged to read that particular page or article.
  • Bright colours are very important to have a successful magazine, because they have the power to drive your readers attention to a particular place that you want them to look. Similar to the images and boarders, but the colours also help to give the reader an emotion as well. I chose the colours yellow and green for most of mine, which are the Idsall School colours, but also the colour green is associated with natural and eco-friendly things, and it's thought of to be a blissful colour. I also chose yellow, and the colour is associated with happiness, surprise and summer, and it's thought of to be a very happy and cheerful colour. I thought that these two colours are perfect for my magazine contents page and the front page.
  • Slanted text/a different font/font size/underlined/bold/different coloured text are very important to have a successful magazine. These different points all catch the readers eye but in their own way. For example: I have used slanted text for my 'CONTENTS' text at the top of the page, this gives the reader a fun and outgoing interpretation of  my magazine, it makes things out of the normal and makes you think outside the box. Various different font sizes/underline/bold are used to catch the attention of the reader so they can notify and realise what the importance of the text will perhaps be, and what is most interesting and most important according to the editor and the writers. The different colours of the text gives the reader perhaps a particular emotion to feel while they are reading the text, this is done for a certain reaction, of which the institution wants to make the audience feel.
Theory

Today in our Media lesson we learned about Media Audiences, and I believe that some of the things we've leant will help me with my school magazine, such as:
  • The Imaginary Entity - which is the idea of defining the social position of the audience member, having an imagery person in mind that would be your average  watcher/target audience. I believe this will help me because I will understand what I will need to do to appeal to my target audience (putting myself in their shoes) and keep on task throughout.
  • The Mode of Address - which is the the way that a particular media text speaks/addresses to its audience. I believe that this will help me because I will have an ideal magazine draft in my head throughout the process and I will stick to it, knowing how I'm going to speak to my audience through media encourages me to think of different ways I can do so.
  • Uses and Gratifications - which is the idea of an audience having a set of needs that are met by the media. I believe this will help me because if I know what my target audience wants I can give it to them in the best way I see fit, (in a imaginative perhaps helpful way).
These are the various different things that I picked up a pon most, and I believe that when I come to making my music magazine, I will consider these three things very highly.

My School Magazine Front Cover

This is an example of my first draft, I liked what I had done although I thought that the name didn't stand out too much and I wanted people to look at the name of the magazine first.

This is my second school magazine front draft cover.
I have changed a few things from my first idea:
  • I thought that the text 'The Idsall News' wasn't standing out as much like i wanted it too, so i changed the colour to a brighter one, and I believe that this makes it stand out a lot more.

This is my 'almost finished' draft, I also want to include the date and issue number, and perhaps a bar code.

This is my 'very nearly' finished 'The Idsall News' front cover.

I am very proud of my draft, and I hope that I can get some good feedback from my teachers and peers.
I wanted to include the school logo, because I think that it needs to look more official, so people know that they are actually looking at the official Idsall School magazine.
I have also changed the 'ITS OUT 50TH BIRTHDAY' colour, because I feel that it's an issue people will need to know about, and that it is perhaps a special edition. I think that the barcode, issue number and date makes it look a lot more official, and realistic.
I have also added some shapes (which are green stars) to keep the idea that it is a children's school and a child magazine.

Although, the fact that my magazine is landscape has proven a problem for the magazine, because magazines aren't landscape and it doesn't look like an official magazine. I took the picture landscape, which made the front cover landscape. This will not be an issue for my music magazine, because I will take the picture at portrait.

Finding the Right Colours

I have to consider the different colours for my magazine and what they would represent.

And the colours on my contents page:

I don't want my contents page to contain a massive image like my front page, instead it will have lots of little images which will give the target audience an idea about the articles they will be reading. I hope that the pictures will interest them as much as my front page and the colours that I have chosen for my contents page will.

Colours, Moods and Feelings

This is my mood board for different emotions that I think magazines portray to their target audience, and for my magazine I want it to have a happy feel to it!
Considering what colours to use I think is very important to having a successful magazine, when you select certain colours you give off that emotion slightly to the target audience. I would like my magazine to have a calm, relaxed, yet fun feel to it.

I wanted to use the primary colours for my magazine, because I am trying to make the magazine for all ages and I want it to be eye catching, so I think bright and very different colours would catch the eye.
I am going to be traditional with my magazine colours, and I'm going to use the original Idsall School colours to keep the tradition alive, and I want to be representing Idsall, considering it's a Idsall School Magazine.

The Contents Page

This is my contents page, which shows all the page number of what's inside the magazine (interviews, pictures of the students art work, etc). By the time I have finished it properly it will have such improvements as:
  • Pictures of what the articles are to give the target audience an idea
  • The background will be more colourful (lime green colour)

My School Magazine Front Cover

This is my magazine front cover so far, without the background picture, which will be an extreme long shot of the front of the school.
The front cover has:

  • The magazine name "The Idsall News"
  • Establishing that it's the schools 50th birthday, so a 'special edition'
  • Advertisements to give you an idea of what the magazine will have inside it
This is where I am at so far, by the time I am finished it will have added onto it:

  • The date
  • The edition number
  • The fact that it's a special edition
  • Picture of the school
  • The text will become more colourful
